Arden’s Choice in north

PANSPACIFICFLIGHT filly Arden’s Choice has joined the Ardmore stable of Barry Purdon and won’t be returning to the South Island until the big fillies races at Addington in the autumn.

Arden’s Choice ran second to former All Stars stablemate Golden Goddess in the $80,000 Group II Peter Breckon Memorial Ladyship Stakes at Alexandra Park last month before breaking in the running in the Alabar Sires’ Stakes Final on 31 December.

Her next big target is the Great Northern Oaks at Alexandra Park on 04 March. By staying in the north she’ll do less travelling and also dodge Golden Goddess in the northern heats of the Nevele R Fillies Series. The first of them is at Auckland on 12 February.

All going well, Arden’s Choice will contest the fillies’ final in Christchurch on 14 May and the New Zealand Oaks on 20 May before returning to Cambridge for the Jewels at Queens Birthday Weekend.

Novena Rose blossoms

NOVENA ROSE, one of the most impressive qualifiers in Southland this season when trained at Macca Lodge by Tony Stratford, hasn’t taken long to make an impression in Australia.

Sold for big money in December, the American Ideal three-year-old has won her last two starts in Victoria. On 31 December she led all the way over 1720 metres at Melton, posting a mile rate of 1:55 and running her last half in 55.8. And she followed that up with a win over 2150 metres at Bendigo on 06 January, sitting parked out for the last lap and rating 1:59.9.

The new connections include Victorian harness racing enthusiast Harvey Kaplan and big-time NZ owner Trevor Casey (Stent, Waikiki Beach, Lazarus). Novena Rose is trained by Andy Gath and has been driven in her two wins by his wife Kate.

More Pans success in Australia

Schwartz Denario extended sire Panspacificflight’s good record in Australia when she won at her second start across the Tasman on 07 January.

The four-year-old mare, who won once for Southland trainer Tony Barron before being exported, led all the way over 1980 metres at Tamworth in New South Wales. She was a hot favourite and pulled away to win by nine metres.

Schwartz Denario is the fourth Australian winner from Panspacificflight’s first New Zealand crop. The others have been Glenisla (seven wins), Last Flight In (six wins, including one for Southland trainer Clark Barron) and Sir Mac’s Man (six wins).

Wattlebank Flyer, who won once for Canterbury trainer Tim Trathen before being exported, could be the next to join that list. He was third at Albion Park in Brisbane on 08 January.

Special Pans colt

PANSPACIFICFLIGHT’S stocks have been boosted by the arrival of one particular foal at Macca Lodge this season.

This is a colt out of the Walton Hanover mare Tosca Hanover. So that of course makes him a half-brother to this year’s New Zealand Cup winner Arden Rooney, who was also bred at Macca Lodge.

Arden Lodge proprietor John Stiven booked Tosca Hanover into Panspacificflight because of a double up of Big Towner blood in the pedigree. Tosca Hanover, from the Black Watch family, is by the Big Towner stallion Walton Hanover, while Panspacificflight’s dam You Can Fly is out of the Big Towner mare Rodine Hanover.

The Stivens have been on quite a ride over the past month or so as the breeders of Arden Rooney, who had already won the Hunter Cup in Victoria before he returned for his second Kaikoura Cup win and then the big two-miler the following week.

Arden Rooney’s win at Kaikoura was actually a timely fillip for them because that morning their promising three-year-old Panspacificflight gelding First Class Arden had dropped dead on the training track at Barry Purdon’s Ardmore stable. He was being aimed at the $200,000 PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales Final on 31 December at Alexandra Park.

John bred three mares to Panspacificflight this season and is delighted to get three colts. The others are out of the Presidential Ball mare Ruby Morn (a half-sister to Interdominion entrant Machtu) and the Rocknroll Hanover mare Rockahula Arden.

Pulp Fiction for Gore Cup

TRAINER Tony Stratford has decided to bypass Cup Week with his star pacer Pulp Fiction and set him for southern cups over the summer.

The Art Major four-year-old put in a big run for third in the $50,000 PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales Series Aged Pace at Kaikoura on 02 November. He made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes — shortly after the start and again when being restrained after challenging the winner Alta Orlando for the lead with a round to go — that probably cost him the race.

“I think if Mark Purdon (on Alta Orlando) hadn’t known we’d broken earlier on, he would have handed up and we would probably have won,” Tony says.

Pulp Fiction has come through the race well but Tony has decided against a start in the Junior Free-For-All on Cup Day where he would be up against the likes of Have Faith In Me. Instead he’ll be set for the Gore Cup just after Christmas before tackling the Central Otago Cup at Omakau and the other cup races in Invercargill.

The entire is owned by Tony’s uncle, Alan Steel, of Gore, along with his son Raymond and his other son Chris’s partner Sally McCann. They turned down huge money for Pulp Fiction because they’re enjoying racing him so much.

Tony’s not planning to take Pulp Fiction to Auckland for the big four-year-old features later in the season with the long-term aim to be in Christchurch this time next year — for the New Zealand Trotting Cup.

Tuapeka Lodge sale

THE CUMMINGS family of Lawrence have announced they’re winding down their stud business, Tuapeka Lodge, and selling most of their broodmare band.

Of the 10 mares for sale — all based at Macca Lodge — six have already been sold.

“It’s a bit sad but after 50 years the time has come for Tuapeka Lodge to wind down,” the Cummings say on their website. “We don’t intend to give up completely but to cut back to two or three mares and keep a hobby going for a few more years.

“We’re all getting older and Dan has just found out he has to have open heart surgery after Christmas. Unfortunately there aren’t any young ones in the family who wish to carry on the stud at this stage so now (suddenly) is a good time to wind down.”

The mares sold so far are Sumtala (Bettor’s Delight-Spring Thaw); Raconteur (Bettor’s Delight-Letatalk), whose first live foal, Talkerup, qualified brilliantly in Canterbury this week; Raindowne (Life-Sign-Tuapeka Tango); Lillian (Falcon Seelster-Marsa Star); Hit The Spot (Bettor’s Delight-Tuapeka Christa); and Real Wings (Badlands Hanover-Tuapeka Wings).

Others still for sale are Gracy Lady (Christian Cullen-Spring Thaw), Tango Lady (Artsplace-Tuapeka Tango), Atom Queen (Soky’s Atom-Maureen’s Dream) and Tuapeka Christie (Christian Cullen-Tuapeka Frost).

All the details are on the Tuapeka Lodge website.

FOOTNOTE: The mares have now all been sold.

Bonnie’s Khaleesi on track

IT’S ALL SYSTEMS GO for Show Day with Bonnie’s Khaleesi after her win at the Riverton meeting at Invercargill on 01 November.

The four-year-old Live Or Die mare will represent Macca Lodge in the race they sponsor at Addington on 13 November, the Trained South of the Waitaki race for C1 and C2 pacers.

Junior driver Craig Ferguson managed to get Bonnie’s Khaleesi into the one-one from her second line draw over the 1700-metre mobile. She was up to dispute the pace with the favourite Isola Bella before the turn and held off the late run of Dana Dynasty by half a length, rating 1:58.8 for the sprint distance.

This was the first winning run for a horse in the new Macca Lodge colours. And making the result better was the fact that it was penalty-free for owners Brent and Sheree McIntyre and Wally and Jan Nelson

Take a look here at Bonnie’s Khaleesi winning in the new Macca Lodge colours

Winter Rose foal

THE BREEDING season’s in full swing at Macca Lodge and among the mares to produce a foal so far is the wonderful matron Winter Rose, dam of Group 1 winning Panspacificflight filly Arden’s Choice.

Winter Rose and her Somebeachsomewhere colt at Macca Lodge

After a string of fillies, the In The Pocket mare has produced her second Somebeachsomewhere colt. Breeder John Stiven of Arden’s Lodge has been a big fan of the son of Mach Three right from the start and bred one of his very first horses here, Someardensomewhere (seven wins, $70,000 in stakes), who sadly collapsed and died in training earlier in the month.

Someardensomewhere was the first horse syndicated by the Stivens and this year they’ve syndicated two Somebeachsomewhere yearling colts — one out of Winter Rose and the other out of her Group 1-placed daughter Southwind Arden. While Somebeachsomewhere’s fully booked this season, Macca Lodge is still taking bookings for his son Net Ten EOM.

John’s also a big fan of Panspacificflight and convinced his late mother Noreen to book seven mares to him in just the second season he was available here. Arden’s Choice was one of the foals. This season John’s awaiting the birth at Macca Lodge of three Panspacificflight foals — out of Tosca Hanover (dam of Hunter Cup winner and New Zealand Cup contender Arden Rooney), Rockahula Arden (Rocknroll Hanover-Ardenart) and Ruby Morn (a Presidential Ball half-sister to Machtu).
